The iconic fairground attraction
The first Ferris wheel was introduced at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 by civil engineer George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. and wowed onlookers with its technical perfection and breathtaking views. The motive for its creation was to compete with the Eiffel Tower in terms of architectural wonder and international appeal. Today, from pilgrimages and carnivals to amusement parks around the world, the Ferris wheel continues to embody the nostalgia, wonder and spirit of these popular events.
Ferris wheel swivel insert
The reverse of the coin features a number of traditional carnival motifs. Clockwise from top is a depiction of a night sky dotted with stars, clouds and hanging lights. The scene shows colourful hot air balloons, a merry-go-round, a soaring swing, children playing, carnival tents, balloons and a thrilling roller coaster ride. The design also includes the date 2025 surrounded by colourful fireworks and the Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark. The centre of the coin features a special Ferris wheel-shaped swivel insert, decorated with coloured Swarovski crystals and 24ct gold plating on an alloy base.
